Data center construction is the tightest hiring market in the building industry right now. Hyperscale and colocation programs are pulling Project Executives, MEP Superintendents and commissioning leaders out of every other sector, paying a premium to do it, and still leaving seats open for months. So the question we hear from GCs, MEP contractors and owners is not “should we use a recruiter” but “which one actually knows this work?” This list answers that, organized by the kind of seat you are trying to fill, with a plain note on where SBR Jobs fits and where another firm will serve you better.
How to choose a data center construction recruiter
Mission critical work punishes generic construction experience. A Superintendent who has run three office towers is not automatically ready for a 48 MW build with Level 5 integrated systems testing at the end of it. Five things separate a recruiter who understands that from one who is searching a database for the word “data center.”
- Ask about commissioning, not square footage. A recruiter who knows this market will ask which commissioning levels your project runs, whether the client is hyperscale or colocation, and who owns the MEP scope. If they cannot talk about Level 3 through Level 5 without looking it up, they cannot screen for it either.
- Direct-hire search or contract staffing. Both exist in this market and both are legitimate. Contract staffing rents you commissioning agents and QA/QC inspectors for the life of the project. Direct-hire search finds the Project Executive or General Superintendent who will run your next three programs. Decide which you need before you call anyone.
- Regional bench. The candidate who will actually take your job lives within reach of it, or has a reason to move. Ask each firm which markets they have placed in during the last twelve months, and whether that list includes yours. Northern Virginia experience does not by itself fill a Santa Clara seat.
- How they find people. The leaders you want are employed by a competitor, on a live program, and not reading job boards. The seats that matter get filled by calling those people one at a time with a real story about your pipeline.
- Process you can see. A market map before outreach, weekly reporting, a realistic shortlist timeline, and references from clients on mission critical programs. Any firm that will not name a timeline has not run the search before.

Executive and owner-side seats
SBR Jobs Ours
VPs of Data Center Construction, Regional Directors of Delivery and Directors of Mission Critical Projects for contractors and operator construction teams in California. Project managers to presidents is the range we work in, and executive seats in this market draw on the same passive-candidate network as the field seats above.
JRG Partners
Executive recruiting for hyperscale data center and mission critical construction leadership across the United States: VP of Global Infrastructure, Head of Data Center Construction, Director of Critical Facilities Operations. Sources passive candidates from hyperscale cloud providers and EPC firms and screens hard on MEP and Tier standard depth.
Blue Signal Search
Phoenix, Arizona. Data center recruiting across both construction and operations, from Project Managers and engineers to executive leadership, through retained, engaged and contingent search plus staffing. Nationwide, with particular strength in Northern Virginia, Phoenix, Dallas and Chicago.
Contract field staff and trades
If you need commissioning agents, QA/QC inspectors or electricians on site next month for the life of the project, that is a staffing product, not a search product. Data Center TALNT and LVI Associates both run contract desks for mission critical work, and the large trades staffing firms cover electricians and pipefitters. That is a different product from anything else on this page, and a good one for what it is.
What California data center programs are paying in 2026
Annual base salary ranges from SBR’s 2026 California Construction Salary Guide, built from our own placements, offers and counteroffers on mission critical programs. Project bonuses, per diems and completion incentives are negotiated on top, and they are a large part of why these seats pull people out of commercial work.

Where SBR Jobs fits, and where we do not
We do one thing: permanent, direct-hire recruiting for construction management in California, project managers to presidents, with a mission critical practice built around the Northern California data center corridor. Santa Clara and the South Bay, Sacramento and the Central Valley are home ground. We have recruited for the California building industry since 1997, we are based in Sacramento, and most of the people we place were not looking when we called. If your seat is a mission critical Project Executive, an MEP Superintendent, a commissioning manager or a VP of Data Center Construction anywhere in California, we are a strong call. If you need twenty commissioning agents on contract in Ashburn, one of the firms above will serve you better, and we will tell you so on the phone.
Questions to ask any data center recruiter before you sign
- Which three mission critical seats like mine have you filled in the last year, and in which markets?
- Is this direct-hire search, or contract staffing? Which agreement am I signing?
- How do you screen for commissioning experience, and who on your team can tell Level 4 from Level 5?
- How will you source? Who calls the candidates, and what do they say about our program?
- What does your weekly reporting look like? Can I see a sample?
- Who else are you working with in my market, and how do you handle off-limits?
Frequently asked questions
Who are the best data center construction recruiters?
It depends on the seat and the market. For field leadership and project management on hyperscale and colocation builds, SBR Jobs in California, The Birmingham Group, iRecruit.co and Data Center TALNT. For MEP and commissioning talent, SBR Jobs, Pkaza and LVI Associates. For executive and owner-side seats, SBR Jobs, JRG Partners and Blue Signal Search. For contract field staff, Data Center TALNT and LVI Associates run staffing desks.
Who recruits data center construction talent in Northern California?
SBR Jobs. We are based in Sacramento and recruit mission critical Project Executives, Project Managers, MEP Superintendents, commissioning managers and construction executives for data center programs in Santa Clara and the Bay Area, Sacramento and the Central Valley, on a direct-hire basis only.
Do I need a recruiter with data center experience, or will a good construction recruiter do?
For mission critical seats, use a recruiter who already knows the work. Screening for commissioning depth, MEP coordination on a live-load facility, and hyperscale client expectations is specialized, and a generalist will send you strong commercial builders who have never run an integrated systems test.
Which data center construction roles are hardest to fill?
MEP Superintendents and commissioning managers with completed hyperscale programs, followed by Project Executives who can carry several sites at once. All three are employed, well paid and being called weekly, which is why direct outreach beats postings in this market.
How long does a mission critical search take?
For most leadership seats, expect a calibrated shortlist within two to three weeks and an accepted offer in six to ten weeks, depending on seniority, location and how competitive the compensation is. Relocation searches and rare specialties run longer.
What does a data center Project Manager earn in California?
A mission critical Project Manager earns $140,000 to $185,000 base in California in 2026, and a Senior Project Manager $170,000 to $215,000, before project bonuses and incentives. Full ranges are in SBR’s 2026 California Construction Salary Guide.
