SBR Jobs recruits the leadership that builds AI data centers and mission critical facilities: mission critical Project Executives, MEP Superintendents, Commissioning Managers, preconstruction and estimating leaders, and the field teams that deliver hyperscale campuses. Direct-hire executive search, based in California, recruiting for data center programs in California and nationwide.
The AI construction boom is a talent war
The explosion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and high-density data infrastructure has unleashed a historic surge in data center construction. Major tech firms are awarding multi-billion-dollar campuses at a pace the industry has never seen, and they are aggressively hiring the top construction talent to build them.
Data center projects are draining the leadership ranks of GCs, developers, and specialty contractors nationwide. Roles that once served commercial, industrial, and healthcare projects are being pulled into large-scale data center programs, and only a small subset of the workforce has true hyperscale or mission critical experience. That scarcity is the bottleneck on every awarded program, and it’s exactly where a specialist recruiter earns their fee.
Mission critical and data center roles we place
- Regional Director of Data Center Delivery
- VP of Data Center Construction
- Director of Mission Critical Projects
- Senior Project Executive
- Project Executive (MC)
- Program Manager (multi-site)
- Senior Project Manager (MC)
- Project Manager (MC)
- General Superintendent (MC)
- Senior Superintendent
- Superintendent
- MEP Superintendent
- Commissioning Manager (Cx)
- VP of Preconstruction
- Director of Preconstruction (MC)
- Chief Estimator
- Senior Estimator (MC)
- Electrical Estimator (DC)
- Civil Estimator
- Design Manager (MC)
- MEP Design Manager
- HVAC Controls Manager
- VDC/BIM Manager
- Senior Project Engineer
- Project Engineer
- Field Engineer
- Assistant Project Manager
- Assistant Superintendent
We speak the language these builds run on: hyperscale vs. colocation vs. enterprise, MEP coordination at data hall density, commissioning levels 1 through 5, long-lead switchgear and generator procurement, phased turnover on live campuses. That’s what makes our outreach land with candidates who ignore every other recruiter.

What the market is telling executives
- Data centers are absorbing senior leadership at a record pace. Superintendents, construction managers, and project executives are being recruited aggressively for mega-campuses with multi-phase buildouts.
- Compensation pressure is highest for technical operations roles. Mission critical PMs, MEP Supers, and Commissioning Managers now command salaries 10-25% above standard GC rates.
- Few professionals have the experience. Only a small subset of the workforce has true hyperscale or mission critical experience, creating bottlenecks in project staffing.
- Traditional builders can’t match tech-funded pay. The boom is pulling top talent out of commercial mid-rise, corporate interiors, distribution centers, industrial, manufacturing, and public sector work.
- The next 24 months decide who keeps their bench. Companies without a proactive recruiting and succession plan will feel the full impact of the talent drain.
Why SBR for mission critical searches
Specialists, not generalists
Construction leadership recruiting since 1997. We know who has real hyperscale scars and who just has a data center logo on their resume.
Passive-candidate reach
The MEP Super you need is on a live campus right now, not on a job board. We approach them directly, peer to peer.
Speed built for this market
Offer acceptance industry-wide has fallen to 20%. Our searches run on mapped markets and weekly reporting, because slow kills in mission critical hiring.

Every search is benchmarked against our own 2026 data center salary data, so your offer clears the market the first time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you recruit outside California?
Yes. Data center programs run wherever power and land are, and so does our candidate network. The salary table above covers both California and the major non-California data center markets.
Do you work with candidates?
Yes. If you build data centers or want to, start on our data center construction jobs page. Every conversation is confidential and free for candidates.
What makes mission critical hiring different?
The margin for error. Commissioning, MEP coordination, and phased turnover on live campuses demand people who have done it before, and only a small pool has. Screening for real hyperscale experience is most of the work, and it’s work a generalist recruiter can’t do.
What does a mission critical Project Manager earn?
In California, $140,000 to $185,000 base in 2026; Senior PMs run $170,000 to $215,000. Outside California, roughly 20% less. Premiums stack on top for hyperscale program experience.
We’re losing people to data center builders. Can you help us hold the line?
Yes. Half of this fight is retention: knowing the market rate before your best Super gets the call. We share the benchmarks, and when you do lose someone, we refill the seat fast.
Staffing a data center program?
Tell us the role, the market, and the timeline. We’ll tell you what the talent pool really looks like and what it takes to win in it, before you commit to anything.
