SBR Jobs · Mission Critical Recruiting · Commissioning Managers · 2026

SBR Jobs recruits commissioning managers, commissioning leads and MEP commissioning engineers for the general contractors, electrical and mechanical contractors, commissioning firms and owners building hyperscale, colocation and enterprise data centers. Direct-hire search only, in California and wherever your data center program runs. Recruiting construction leadership since 1997.

Why commissioning managers are the hardest seat on a data center job

A data center is not done when the building is done. It is done when every generator, UPS, switchboard, chiller and cooling unit has been proven through Level 1 factory witness testing, Level 2 installation checks, Level 3 startup, Level 4 functional performance testing and Level 5 integrated systems testing. The commissioning manager owns that path, and on a hyperscale campus they own it while construction, turnover and live operations overlap in the same building.

The pool of people who have actually taken a live data hall through Level 4 and Level 5 is small, and most of them are booked on programs that run for years. They are not on job boards. Reaching them takes a recruiter who knows which builders, contractors and commissioning firms have done that work, and who on those teams ran it.

What a data center commissioning manager owns

Commissioning plan and scripts

The Cx plan, the test scripts for each level and the issues log, kept aligned with the owner’s basis of design.

Factory witness testing

Level 1 witness tests on generators, switchgear, UPS and cooling equipment before it ships, so problems are caught at the factory, not on site.

Startup and functional testing

Level 2 and Level 3 checks and startup with the trade contractors and vendors, then Level 4 functional performance tests system by system.

Integrated systems testing

Level 5 IST that proves the electrical and mechanical systems work together under failure scenarios, load bank testing included.

Turnover to operations

Phased turnover of data halls to the operator’s facilities team, with documentation, training and a clean closeout package.

Coordination with the trades

Daily work with the electrical and mechanical subcontractors, the controls vendor and the owner’s commissioning agent to keep testing on schedule.

What we screen for

  • Level 4 and Level 5 on live data halls
  • Hyperscale or colocation scale
  • Medium voltage, switchgear, generators and UPS
  • Chilled water, air and liquid cooling
  • BMS and EPMS integration
  • Load bank testing
  • Owner and Cx agent relationships
  • Documentation discipline
  • Credentials such as CxA, CCP or BCxP
  • Safe work on energized systems

Who we recruit commissioning managers for

General contractors with mission critical groups, electrical and mechanical contractors that self perform commissioning, independent commissioning firms, and owner and developer construction teams that run commissioning in house. We recruit for programs in Silicon Valley and Santa Clara, the Sacramento region, Reno and Northern Nevada, Southern California, and other West Coast and national markets, including relocations for multi year programs.

How an SBR commissioning search runs

  1. Intake with the hiring leader

The seat, the program it will carry, the scope, the owner, the team it joins and the culture it has to fit. We push back when the title, the scope and the pay do not line up.
  2. Market map

Every builder, electrical and mechanical contractor, commissioning firm and owner team that has delivered similar mission critical work, and the people inside them who actually ran it.
  3. Confidential outreach

Direct, discreet conversations with employed leaders, most of whom are not looking and never apply to postings.
  4. Screened short list

Candidates vetted on the programs they delivered, field references and culture fit, each with notes on why they fit your seat and what it will take to move them.
  5. Offer and start

We manage the offer and the counteroffer, keep both sides informed, and report weekly until your hire is on site.

What commissioning leaders earn

Commissioning pay moves with scale and level. Managers who have led Level 5 testing on large halls command a premium, and counteroffers are common. See current data center ranges on our data center recruiting page and in the 2026 California construction salary guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who recruits commissioning managers for hyperscale data center projects?

SBR Jobs (Silicon Beach Recruiter) recruits commissioning managers, commissioning leads and MEP commissioning engineers for hyperscale, colocation and enterprise data center builds on a direct-hire basis. We have recruited construction leadership since 1997 and recruit in California and wherever a data center program runs.

Do you recruit MEP commissioning managers for data center projects?

Yes. Electrical and mechanical commissioning managers and engineers who have taken live facilities through Level 4 functional testing and Level 5 integrated systems testing.

Do you recruit commissioning managers for Northern California data center builds?

Yes. Silicon Valley, Santa Clara, the Sacramento region and Reno are core markets for us, and we also relocate commissioning talent from other markets when a program needs it.

What is the difference between a commissioning manager and a QA/QC manager?

A QA/QC manager makes sure the work is installed to the drawings, specs and codes. A commissioning manager proves the systems perform as designed, Level 1 through Level 5. See our guide to QC managers on data center construction.

Do you place contract commissioning agents?

No. SBR Jobs recruits on a direct-hire basis only. Every placement is a permanent hire on your payroll.
